Entering the world of ESSENTIAL OILS (EO) goes right up there with babywearing, baby led weaning, and elimination communication when it comes to being flat out intimidated to take the plunge. I find myself YET AGAIN asking myself the same old questions while trying to learn about something new I want to incorporate into my life. "What do I need?" "Where do I start?" "How do I use them?" "What information is reliable?" "Is this even worth my time?" I actually sat on the fence for a WHOLE YEAR trying to decide whether this was route that I wanted to invest in. I was SO overwhelmed with all the information out there. And even more so, the contradicting "facts" that I was coming across. So, how and why did I take the plunge you may ask? Here goes...
Feb 2014, I met Sheri (from The Essential Manatee) in a mommy group and kept seeing her posts about EO. After chatting with her off and on for a few weeks, she sent me a citrus blend sample to help me with my lack of energy and to help uplift my mood/ ward off depression. I used it aromatically and really liked how it made me feel, but I still wasn't sure it was enough to convince me that I was ready to commit. So, I continued to sit on the sidelines and keep taking in what info I came across.
The silver lining to a month of teething hell (10 months later) was when Oilculture found us on Instagram, and sent us some samples to try out. If it weren't for them spreading the oily love, I would still be sitting on that fence! They sent us the three basic oils (lemon, lavender, and peppermint), AND their Thieves blend for teething. What I didn't know initially was what exactly I was supposed to do with this stuff. I had read a lot of info, but knowing how to use them SAFELY came with time, research, and LOTS of patience. I began using the lavender on the girls every night before bed by mixing one drop into their coconut oil when we got to their feet and backs. (We use coconut oil as our daily moisturizer! No lotions. Eventually I want to make some body butters!)
So, here's the kicker to this story. Only after a few days, the girls started ASKING for oils on their feet. They would point and "thhaaa, thaaaa" to the bottles. And generally pitch fits when it was time to put the bottles away lol. This to me was a sign that they were liking what we were doing (right?). My parents had also mentioned that during their slumber party the girls kept taking their socks off and pointing to their toes at bedtime. I didn't pack their oil because we were still only 1-2 weeks into using them and I honestly didn't think it would make a difference to the girls.
When we started to run low, I went ahead and ordered a starter kit that had your 10 basic oils. (Looking back, I wish I would have went with my gut and gotten the kit with the diffuser though.) I had several of my own ailments I was trying to shake off, and I mean, what other options did the girls leave me? I was not about to do a "we need oils on our feet" fight with them every night. On top of that, I've never been really big into meds, especially after a HUGE failed attempt at treatment with antidepressants a few years ago. But, between having ADHD, S.A.D, constantly feeling lazy and unmotivated, having to deal with "life," AND being a mom I needed to try something! Throw mood swings, a bad case of PMS and cramps, diminished appetite, and shin splints into the mix and you've got a girl that is desperate for something natural that works!
I initially was drawn to EO because I have always been curious about aromatherapy. I KNEW going into this that using them topically seemed like a cool idea, I wasn't sure I was going to ingest them. After I came across THIS AMAZING SITE by AromaticScience,* I knew that I was making the right choice, and my anticipation for my oils went into overdrive! You can read about HOW I started slowly incorporating EO into my daily life in my personal testimonies. And also, if you follow my blog you can stay up to speed on my journey with my mini series of posts. I feel it's important to note that I am NOT compensated by anybody for sharing my stories. I pay for all of my stuff just like the next person. My goal with sharing is to try to help take the edge off for anyone considering using essential oils because there really is a LOT of information out there, not all of it 100% accurate.
*While I have done enough research about ingesting oils to be understand some may assume it is unsafe, I feel comfortable with it after reading the oil education module linked above. I have also decided that, for my own personal benefits, IF I choose to ingest EO, I will mix with coconut oil vs water.
To give you an idea of the other types of things that EO can help with, here is a list of concerns that I received from various friends and family members wanting to try EO:
Share your EO story! Do you oil? How has it changed your life? If not, what's keeping you? Remember, this is 100% a personal preference and that no matter what you choose to do, make sure you feel its the BEST CHOICE for you and your family! At the end of the day, our goals are all the same aren't they? To stay HEALTHY & SURVIVE? :D
