It's day 4 of coughing up gunk, sneezing every 5 seconds, and I'm on box #3 of Puffs Plus (which have still managed to chafe my nose). To top if all off, now I've been wiping 2 tinier noses for the last 24 hours. WHY ATLANTA WEATHER? WHY? What else is a girl to do besides fight allergies during all this crazy weather change? (Especially when it goes from snow, to shorts, to ice storms, to shorts, to wet and windy all within a matter of a few weeks!) Knowing that this was not us being "sick," I did my best to wait it out for a day or 2 with fluids and plenty of breastfeeding for the girls (did I mention the girls were also teething), but the moment I saw MiMi trying to slurp the slobber from her nose, I knew it was time to do something. IMMEDIATELY.
I'm not the kind of person that just turns to the medicine cabinet. (As a matter of fact, I don't even really have a "medicine cabinet." lol). Before oils, I'm not really sure what else I would have done aside from a Vicks humidifier and kept on waiting it out. After consulting my essential oils (EO) guru, The Essential Manatee, I mixed a drop of lemon, lavender, and a touch of peppermint* (LLP) EO with some coconut oil and gave the girls a nice massage before naptime. I applied this mix on their spines and rubbed the leftovers on their little feetsies and the back of my own neck (and whatever other part of my spine I could reach lol).
*PLEASE NOTE: It is not advised to use peppermint oil on infants. I never use this oil on the girls, and in this blend it was a VERY small fraction of this HEAVILY diluted blend. READ MORE ABOUT PEPPERMINT OIL SAFETY and please use safe practices and your better judgement at all times.
When they woke up, I was really excited to see if they were feeling better. (Having to chase after them with tissues and my HOMEMADE CLEANER was a really mommy buzz kill, because I kept having to stop them while they played so I could clean the all the germs.) I was surprised to see that Nadi's crusty nose was still as clear as I had left it (after wiping it with a soft, warm cloth with a hint of peppermint. Like 1/100 of a drop). Even more pleasing news? MiMi was still free and clear of snot. Now of course, I keep in mind that when you wake up it usually takes a few minutes for everything to kick back in to drive, so I kept my eyes peeled. And NADA!!!! I had to wipe a nose maybe once or twice since I applied the oil blend. And of course, like with an OTC or prescribed med, I repeated the application again in 3 hours.
DID YOU KNOW: Essential oils work topically by absorbing through the skin. Taking a warm shower or applying a warm towel over the area (for ex: when I use DEEP BLUE on my shin splints) will help "reactivate" your oils and their potency. I gave the girls a bath about 3 hours after I had last applied the oils, but next time I will time it so that I've put it on their spines and feet about 30-45 minutes before bath time. The next day, literally NOTHING. It's like nothing had ever even happened. And let me be honest with you: I was not 100% consistent with reapplying every few hours on the 2nd day, but I did apply before naptime on their spines! The girls Dad had left for a work trip the day before I tried the LLP oils. When he came back he was amazed to see that the mess he had left behind 2 days ago was just a distant memory. He didn't know what I had done, and had come back into the game with tissues blazing. Instead, he got to play with the girls all evening and not have to keep stopping to jump on snot duty.
