download (2) Aphrodisiac = a substance that enhances or stimulates passion and sexual arousal. There are no essential oils, herbs, foods, or chemicals that will magically or immediately arouse someone who does not want to become aroused. Aphrodisiacs are simply facilitators on that journey.

The aphrodisiacs that are the subject of today's and subsequents posts are essential oils.  The use of essential oils as aphrodisiacs are used mostly through aromatherapy.
Aromatherapy = The art and science of utilizing naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants to balance, harmonize, and promote the health of body, mind, and spirit.  It seeks to unify physiological, psychological, and spiritual processes to enhance an individual's innate healing process (from National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy) DID YOU KNOW that fragrance directly affects our consciousness.
There are many aspects of our modern lives that cause us to look to external assistance to find the desire to become aroused.  Oftentimes a sluggish libido is the results of other health concerns that we need to address first.
SO, how exactly do essential oils work?

Essential oils work as aphrodisiacs by addressing issues such as reducing stress, calming anxiety, easing physical ailments, energizing the body and mind, uplifting mood, and easing depression.  Another very common health issue is hormonal imbalance - men and women of all ages are at 'risk' for this particular physiological issue the symptoms of which include fatigue, vaginal dryness, low libido infertility, hot flashes, insomnia, weight gain or loss, hair loss, and brain fog.

When we smell a substance we are actually breathing in hundreds of unique molecules that interact with the receptors in our olfactory system in thousands of different combinations. Our olfactory system has a direct connection to our limbic system, which is the most ancient and primitive part of our brain.  Our limbic system deals with three key functions: emotions, memories, and arousal (stimulation).  It takes a conscious effort to override the actions of our limbic system.  Because of its role in forming memories, we can utilize the scents produced by the chemistry of essential oils to form INTIMACY MEMORIES that additionally have the power to rebalance our bodies and help them recover from any underlying issues.

When using synthetic scents, we can form scent memories, but the chemistry isn't there to balance our bodies.  The underlying issues still exist and need to be addressed.  When using therapeutic grade essential oils, even those who lack the ability to smell will benefit.  Essential oils can cross the blood brain barrier and increase blood flow to tissue.  Smelling a scent you find pleasing results in the desire to take part in more tactile sensations as well - it's a 'win win' scenario.

DID YOU KNOW: Romans applied aromatic essential oils to their hair, body and soles of feet as well! So you have options for ways to use them! And remember, aromatherapy doesn't have to be complicated. It can be as simple as smelling the flowers!
